When we first got married, we bought a set of dishes, service for 12.
Thank goodness we bought that many, because over the years, several plates and bowls have broken. We still have enough for service for 8, but not much more than that.

Summer cook outs
backyard barbeques .....
I would use them anytime we had the whole family in for dinner and we sat around the table instead of just wherever we wanted in the house. Most of the time dinner is fixed and then each person gets their plate when they are ready and takes it back to the place that they are doing whatever it is that they were doing.
