Are pets too expensive?

I recently read that pet ownership has decreased, due to the recession and slow economic recovery. According to USA Today, Americans had 2 million fewer dogs and 7.6 million fewer cats in 2011 than they did in 2006.

It's really sad that families choose not to have a pet because they can't afford it.  That's one reason why I'm so happy that there are so many pet product coupons out there - those coupons may be allowing families to keep their pets when they otherwise might not be able to.
