Isaac kept me from spending (Wednesday Weekly Shopping)

This week, I went way, way over my budget of $80 per week for groceries, paper and plastic products, and health and beauty items. That's because I made a trip over to the kosher butcher, where I spent 75% of the week's budget just on chicken.

I could have been even farther over budget this week! But Tropical Storm Isaac kept me home on Sunday and Monday, so I couldn't head over to the drug stores to get their deals. (I'll head there later on this week. And everything was fine here after the storm, we just had a few tree branches fall.)

Here's what I got this week:

ALDI: Spent $37.00

Kosher Marketplace: Spent $58.31

Penn-Dutch: Spent $8.60, saved $2.00

Publix: Spent $16.24, saved $25.26

Overall, this week I spent $120.15 for items which retail for $148.41, or a 19% savings based on the retail value of the products at the stores where they were purchased. (But don't compare percentages!)

For the year (35 weeks), I spent $2,667.03 for items which retailed for $5,039.02 and saved $2,371.99, or a 47% savings. That's an average of $76.20 spent each week for a family of five (husband, wife, and daughters ages 15, 11, and 7), including lots of fresh produce, dairy items, and kosher meat, as well as paper and plastic goods, health and beauty items, and cleaning supplies.

In 2011, I spent $4,017.13 for items which retailed for $7,344.08, saving 45% and spending an average of $77.25 per week for the year.
