Growing Culinary Herbs in Containers Review / Giveaway
UPDATE: This giveaway has ended. Winners will be chosen soon.
Growing Culinary Herbs in Containers is exactly the book I need right now.
My youngest daughter has expressed interest in growing plants - in particular, she wants to grow parsley and dill to put in my chicken broth. But every time I've tried to grow vegetables or herbs, something happens. Either I kill the plant by overwatering or underwatering, or the bugs find it and destroy it, or it just dies unexpectedly.
So I was really glad to find Growing Culinary Herbs in Containers, an e-book by Anja Koch. Koch, otherwise known as Little Miss Greenfingers, is a landscape gardener with years of experience and blogs at Gardening Advice, helping gardeners around the globe create the garden of their dreams.
This e-book will tell you everything you need to know to start growing culinary herbs in containers, either outside or inside your home. Koch helps you find the perfect spot to grow each of the 18 types of herbs covered in the book. I never realized that some herbs prefer a southern exposure while others prefer an east or west exposure - perhaps that's one reason why my herbs never did that well.
She also covers what types of containers and soil to use - probably another mistake I made - and whether you should start herb plants from plants at the garden nursery or from seeds. She also describes the best ways to start herbs from seeds, if that is your choice.
The book also gives advice on how to best water and fertilize your herbs. This is definitely an area that I need help in! And it also gives great suggestions on managing pests and diseases - another major problem for me in the past.
Growing Culinary Herbs in Containers not only gives advice on growing herbs, but on how to preserve your harvest as well! I knew some of the methods described, but I had never heard of preserving herbs in salt - what a great idea! And the book points out that herb gardens are not only useful, but can be beautiful, too!
Lastly, there's a guide to specific instructions on growing 18 different culinary herbs. I really appreciated all the detail given in this section.
I really thought this book was great for the novice herb grower, or for the herb grower who had not had much success in the past - that would be me!
It has inspired me - I'll be making a stop soon at a garden center to pick up the items needed to grow some parsley and dill. I'm sure my daughter will enjoy growing herbs with me - and we'll enjoy the results!
