Peanut Butter Balls (Frugal Food Thursday)
Welcome to Frugal Food Thursday! If you have a great frugal recipe, please link up below!
Next week, I'll be posting my recipe for lemon-pepper tilapia with grape tomato salsa. I made it last night, and it was delicious! But this week, I'm rerunning one of my absolute favorite snacks to make my kids, Peanut Butter Balls. I originally got this recipe from The Tightwad Gazette by Amy Dacyczyn.
The cost of peanut butter is increasing, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Farmers in peanut-producing areas are facing drought conditions, and they're also choosing to plant fewer acres of peanuts. Supply of peanuts is down, with demand remaining the same or increasing because of the sour economy. So therefore, prices are rising.
But it will still be possible to find deals on peanut butter, as well as peanut butter coupons. For instance, there will be a 75¢ off coupon for Smart Balance peanut butter in the 1/8/12 Smartsource coupon insert, and there is a $1.25/3 coupon for Planters Peanut Butter in the Deliciously Simple Holiday Recipes coupon book.
I now get honey, dry milk, and sprinkles at ALDI. It's the cheapest source of all of those for me.
These peanut butter balls are easy and fun for the kids to help make. Enjoy!
PEANUT BUTTER BALLS
1/2 cup peanut butter
1/2 cup honey
1 cup dry milk powder
Sprinkles or other items to roll the balls in (cocoa powder, chopped nuts, coconut, etc.)
Mix the peanut butter and honey until smooth. Add the dry milk powder a little at a time and mix, first with a spoon and then later with your hands, until you reach a Play-Doh-like consistency. Remove small chunks and roll into a ball with your hands, then roll into sprinkles or other items. Makes about 16-20 balls.

Great tip to pass along. I heard about the price increase back in October and have been buying a jar at Aldi whenever I go in. (But since I only grocery shop a couple of times a month, I want to try and start buying 2-3 jars when I go in.)
Thanks for hosting! Today I posted a recipe full of healthy probiotics.

Thanks for sharing the peanut butter balls -- one of our favorites! I've linked an economical recipe for Beef Short Ribs that is popular whenever I make it, and it isn't very complicated, either. (I use sweet rice flour instead of wheat flour, so it is gluten-free. It's also naturally dairy-free, egg-free and nut-free, for anyone who is concerned about those.)
That isn't good news about the price of peanuts. Seems to me that if the peanut prices are going up, the farmers should have planted more, rather than less, but then, I'm not a farmer. I'll be looking for some of those peanut butter coupons, for sure.
Peanut Butter Balls are a guilty pleasure for me. Once, I start eating, it is hard to stop.
Thanks for hosting, Laura. Today I linked up a recipe for potato pancakes like my grandmother used to make - simple and delicious. :-)
Thanks for linking up to "It's a Keeper!"

Thanks for the recipe. I did notice that our peanut butter here in Canada went up by $1.00 a container. We go through a LOT of PB...so need to find good deals.
Any peanut butter ball gets my attention! Thanks for sharing...they look yum yum
I can't seem to catch up lately. I missed your blog party. I took a vacation over Christmas and it took me all week just to get my decorations down. I will do better next week. Your PB balls look great.
