I really spent that much on four grocery items

The freezer was pretty clear of meat, save a whole chicken that I'm cooking this weekend. So it was time to head over to the kosher supermarket, where I buy fresh meat. (There are some frozen items at Publix to get - one time I got a turkey for $1.99 a pound. Now that was a good deal.

I got all this food for $56! (she said sarcastically)

4.06 lb ground beef @ $4.99/lb = $20.26
4.26 lb boneless chicken breasts @ $4.99/lb = $21.26
2 packages chicken tenders @ $7.49 = $14.98

Total spent: $56.50

Yep, that's a lot.  And I'm definitely going over my food budget this week.  But due to frugality, as well as my frugal recipes and those that my fellow bloggers post on Frugal Food Thursday, I'll be able to stretch that for a while.

Why is good meat so expensive??? I've started buying grass-fed and local meat and it just kills my budget...but that's why I coupon, so I can spend money on items that are good for me and my family!

Yikes! I know your pain. I did the same thing last wekeend, now I'm next to nothing to spend this week :( But sometimes you got to bite the bullett and get the meat. Thankfully I got ground beef for 2.89/lb and chicken for .99/lb. Whew!

I'm not sure which area you are in but now I'm going to feel like I get a SALE everytime I go to Kroger to buy meat. I normally wait till it goes on sale but I did buy a pack today at full price of ground angus at $3.99 a lb, I was bummed about that until I saw your post.

Have you looked into getting your meat from the local butcher or buying directly from the farmer? When we lived in Maryland we were lucky enough to share "1/2 pig" and 1/4 cow orders with a friend from a local farmer....SO MUCH cheaper than getting at the store. Here in Boston I am very fortunate that we have a local butcher shop in our neighborhood that is a lot nicer on the wallet. Have you checked to see if there are any around you? $4.99 for chicken is super expensive

Why is kosher meat so much more expensive? Honestly, I know nothing about what "kosher" means...
