Wednesday Weekly Shopping: Dairy and produce at ALDI
I invite you to link up to your best grocery deals below, to inspire others to save more!
It's week two of the Clean Out the Cupboards Challenge, and so far, I'm sticking to my goals. I bought pretty much everything at ALDI this week - dairy and produce items, and apple juice for the kids. The only exceptions were some jalapenos for salsa for Freezer Cooking Days, bananas for my husband to take to work, and a gallon of milk at CVS (paid for with Extra Care Bucks left over from December). And my weekly bill was about a third of what I normally spend. It's great to be saving money this month, too!
One thing I've realized is that though ALDI has the best prices on milk and eggs in South Florida ($1.99 per gallon of milk and 69¢ per dozen eggs), their produce prices just aren't that great. They usually have a few produce items on sale at can't-be-beat prices - like the time I paid 25¢ for a package of celery. But other than those, they're about the same as the large chain grocery stores. I have a few smaller chain grocery stores in my area, which probably buy from smaller local vegetable growers, and often have much, much lower prices on produce. Either that, or their produce is priced more cheaply to get people in the door.
So once the Clean Out the Cupboards Challenge is over, I'll continue to buy at ALDI the produce that is on sale, but probably will buy other produce elsewhere.
Overall, this week I spent $29.45 for items worth $32.45, or a big 9% savings, solely due to the milk purchase of CVS. (But don't compare percentages!) Of course, if I compared the ALDI prices to supermarket full prices, it would show a lot more savings.
See all my shopping here.

Thanks for the link up. You have been utterly disciplined during this challenge. $1.99 for a gallon of milk is a really good price. Great job! I've been trying to buy organic milk lately though, since hubby likes that better. It puts a little dent in my saving.
I need to be so much better at this. I just watched extreme couponing and was inspired to try and save some money (not make it a full time job).
I am carefully keeping track of the Aldi prices, and by keeping track and watching out for deals at my regular stores, shopping at Aldi has shaved up $15-$20 off my regular budget.
